Episode 3: Loiza Iszard

Loiza Iszard has served as a faithful member of Providence Baptist church for nearly 65 years. She was born in Peru, lived in Japan during World War 2. On August 2, 1944, Loiza was aboard a cargo ship carrying hundreds of evacuees from eight schools in Naha, Okinawa. The cargo ship near the one Loiza was on was Tsushima Maru. Also in the waters was the USS Bowfin, and what the crew on the Bowfin did not know was that it was firing its torpedo at a ship full of 1,788 passengers with about 800-900 children aboard. Loiza and the children on the other ship would escape as they heard the explosion. 

For years, Loiza would live at a Buddhist Temple, apart from her father, living off of rations and being educated by chaperones.
